Abstrakt EN: The idea of active aging and the concept of third age are prominent attempts to redefine the representation of ageing. At the same time, the closed connection between activity and old age epitomized in the discourse of active ageing pose a new set of demands on ageing individuals. The article analyses the norms of grandmothering in relation to the changing cultural representation of ageing and especially in relation to ideas about active ageing. It focuses on two generations of women in the Czech Republic who are currently mothers or grandmothers of young children. Based on interviews that were carried out with 20 mothers and 30 grandmothers of children under the age of 10, the article analyses how the discourse of aktivity influence the way they construct the norm of ?good? grandmother and how they relate to their own ageing. Both the mothers and the grandmothers pointed out how the family role of grandmothers had changed compared to past generations of grandmothers. This change is framed by the idea of activity and active life-style that is constructed as a new norm of ?good? grandmothering. Especially mothers highlighted that a ?good? grandmother provides not just instrumental care but above all ?adventures? and activity and the idea of activity represented a crucial framework of expectation concerning their own (possible) future grandmother role.
