WHY DOES CORRUPTION PERSIST?

The University of West Bohemia participated in the LUXCORE project led by Tereza Østbø Kuldova from OsloMet - Oslo Metropolitan University in Norway. The research team included experts from the Norwegian Institute for Defence Studies, Northumbria University in Newcastle, UK, Università di Bologna in Italy, and the University of West Bohemia. The project explored why - despite global anti-corruption efforts - corruption still persists. It focused on the “moral economy of fraud”, i.e. the criminogenic culture that fosters corruption. It analysed the interplay between the “defiance” industry (providers of luxury goods and services that ensure secrecy) and the compliance industry (actors promoting ethical behaviour) that undermines traditional anti-corruption measures. A Czech researcher from the University of West Bohemia focused on a genealogical analysis of the emergence of the compliance industry in the Czech Republic and contributed to the successful implementation of the project by publishing a peer-reviewed article, publishing a chapter in a collective monograph, co-organizing a workshop in Prague, participating in two workshops in Oslo, and presenting his research at two international and three domestic conferences.

The project was supported by The Research Council of Norway (project number: 202339).
