Investigating Political, Economic and Social History in The 19th and 20th Centuries

The Department of Historical Sciences is one of the established departments of the Faculty of Arts. It is not only the creative work and other activities, but also the internationalisation and international cooperation of the members of the Department that focuses primarily on several areas of modern political, economic and social history – the history of the Far East in the 19th and 20th centuries (Kodet, Skřivan, Skřivan)the history of migration (Boček) or Eastern issues in the 19th century (Vyčichlo)regional history of Western Bohemia (Lhoták)the history of Czechoslovakia with an emphasis on the First Czechoslovak Republic (Novotný)the history of the British Empire in the 19th and 20th centuries (Valkoun) or environmental history (Urban). In the spring of 2018, the Centre for Japanese Studies (headed by Dr Kodet) was established at the Department to promote Japanese history to the Czech public in both a scholarly and popular form (currently there are agreements with Doshisha University, Kyoto and Kokushikan University, Kyoto). The Department also publishes an international scholarly journal indexed in the Scopus database in cooperation with the University of Hamburg.
